NAIDOC Week, Sorry Day & Walking Together

The Walking Together Committee works towards creating a culturally safe organisation and practice that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and clients.

The Committee’s members are representative and have firsthand knowledge and experience in the barriers and stigma that is present for these communities. The members also have a strong passion to involve others in celebrating the diversity involved among Aboriginal communities, and increase awareness about historical hardships, and the ongoing trauma that is still experienced.

Discussions encouraged staff to consider how RA Tas can translate awareness, celebration of culture, and sensitivity to specific needs in practice.

RA Tas came together to commemorate and remember the mistreatment of Australia’s First Nations peoples during National Sorry Day the National Day of Healing, held in May. Events were held this year across each RA Tas site and gave staff the opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on First Nations peoples’ history and the continuing difficulties faced. Discussions encouraged staff to consider how RA Tas can translate awareness, celebration of culture, and sensitivity to specific needs in practice. These events also gave the opportunity to unveil artwork organised by the Walking Together Committee which are now proudly displayed across our sites to create a more accessible and welcoming environment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and clients. The incredible pieces of artwork were completed by two Tasmanian First Nations women and showcase some of the beautiful traditional techniques in painting and jewellery making.
