Neighbour Day 2021

Relationships Australia Tasmania and Healthy Tasmania have worked together since 2018 to support Neighbour Day. Neighbour Day is a national day that encourages and supports people and organisations to come together to reduce and prevent loneliness by building positive and meaningful connections with each other that last beyond the day itself.

In 2021 Healthy Tasmania generously funded the Heathy Tasmania Neighbour Day Challenge with a $25,000 grant. The Healthy Tasmania Neighbour Day Challenge is an opportunity to register a healthy, inclusive Neighbour Day activity and apply for a small grant of up to $1000 to fund those activities.

We saw more applications than ever before this year, and it was rewarding to see the uptake of the funding and the genuine goodwill of the people involved.

In the spirit of the original intention of Neighbour Day, themes of positive social connection and neighbourly action ran strong throughout all the events.

Neighbour Day activities were state-wide, involved hundreds of community members and included:

  • Traditional Chinese tea experiences
  • The launch of a performance and exhibition space
  • A Tasmanian Aboriginal education day involving history, bush foods and medicines
  • A community gardening day
  • Community lending libraries and share stations
  • Cooking activities to create and share Tasmanian recipes
  • Community lunch for people in need
  • Community care through sing-alongs for people living with dementia and their care givers
  • A clothes swap event to increase community engagement and awareness of the sustainability of op shopping
  • A bush picnic that included propagation sessions, bird watching, scavenger hunts and morning tea

In the spirit of the original intention of Neighbour Day, themes of positive social connection and neighbourly action ran strong throughout all the events. Promoting kindness among strangers, community interaction, cultural and environmental awareness, and relationship building, Neighbour Day 2021 was a resounding success.
