Elder Relationship Service

In 2020, RA Tas was successful in its submission to the Tasmanian Community Fund to provide Elder Relationship Services for three years.

This service is designed to support older Tasmanians who are at risk of experiencing elder abuse. Services may include support to:

  • prevent or resolve family conflict
  • have difficult conversations
  • plan for the future (including medical, health, financial or living arrangements)
  • resolve differences in ways that improve relationships
  • make decisions that protect the interests, rights and safety of families

One year in and the Elder Relationship Service is making a real difference in the lives of many older Tasmanians.

Mediators and counsellors specifically trained in delivering services to people experiencing conflict about ageing-related issues and working with the older person themselves, their family or carers deliver our Elder Relationship Services.

In the first 12 months of service delivery RA Tas have supported 137 clients. The majority have commenced with counselling services prior to accessing mediation support.

To support older Tasmanian’s RA Tas established formal agreements for referrals with Advocacy Tasmania, who provide the Elder Abuse Helpline and with the Tasmanian branch of the Council on the Ageing (COTA).

One year in and the Elder Relationship Service is making a real difference in the lives of many older Tasmanians. RA Tas has built a strong referral network with other services that are specific to older people who may be experiencing abuse or who’s situation may become abusive without assistance.
