Migrant Resource Centre North Taster Day

This year RA Tas extended its focus to nurture relationships with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and those who support them. This has resulted in an increase in engagement with these communities, which includes an increase in the number of people who are using our services.

Of particular note was an event shared with the Migrant Resource Centre North, referred to as the ‘RA Taster Day’. After months of co-design and careful community-focused planning, this event was successfully hosted by MRC North at their centre in Mowbray, Launceston.

…the aim of the event was for RA Tas to build connections with those who attended and educate them around the services we offer.

Attended by more than 80 people from CALD communities, plus interpreters and bilingual support workers, the aim of the event was for RA Tas to build connections with those who attended and educate them around the services we offer. This was achieved through song, dance, drumming, traditional cultural board games and traditional cuisine. It enabled 1:1 tailored information to be shared with each participant, with a suite of resources prepared specifically for the event to increase engagement, build trust and ultimately encourage referrals.

Participants enjoyed the Drumbeat session.

This event had an evaluation which included the views of practitioners, community members and the MRC North team. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Practitioners and community members found the co-design elements valuable, and participants stated they “enjoyed the drumming and would love to do this again” and asked, “When can I start Drumbeat?“. We also learned that the craft icebreakers were a significant help in enabling introductions, and starting conversations to learn more about what this community want and need from RA Tas.

Additionally, there was an interest in accessing the Disability Royal Commission (DRC), Women’s Support Service and Reconnect programs, which align with specific needs of this community in the North.

A staff member from RA Tas now spends a day a month at MRC North in Mowbray to continue to nurture these relationships and ensure we are flexible and responsive to the needs of this community.
