Student Placement Program

The social work student placement at RA Tas is a 14-week full time practicum where students are fully immersed in a clinical setting with guidance and support from one of our practitioners.

Students develop a learning plan with the practitioner, with learning objectives determined by the nature, frequency, and type of learning experiences we can provide, and the student’s desired areas of development.

Melanie is a Social Work Masters student at the University of Tasmania, and started her student placement with us in May 2022.

Placement has allowed Melanie to experience a ‘typical day’ in the life of a social worker, which has helped her understand what to expect in the workforce in this service context.

Melanie wanted to gain an understanding of the services available for individuals, couples, and families that support all aspects of relationships and separation. Placement has allowed Melanie to experience a ‘typical day’ in the life of a social worker, which has helped her understand what to expect in the workforce in this service context.

According to Melanie, one of the highlights of placement was seeing all the theoretical knowledge she acquired through her studies come to life in practice. During her time on placement, she built on her practice skills for group work, risk assessment and observations.

RA Tas were so supportive. I found the people to be professional, friendly, and welcoming with a willingness to assist my learning

RA Tas has benefited greatly from having a student placement this year, and their contribution to various projects and co-facilitation has been met with wonderful feedback from staff and clients.
