mindfulness and art-based Therapy
Mindfulness and art-based therapy workshops were introduced to support survivors, and individuals impacted by the inquiry, specifically addressing the needs of those who have experienced traumatic childhood experiences such as sexual abuse, violence, or neglect within institutional settings.
The workshops were designed, developed, and facilitated by RA Tas practitioners, drawing on their deep understanding of trauma neurobiology, and extensive experience in evidence-based trauma therapies, while also incorporating peer support.
Several mindfulness and art-based therapy workshops were held throughout this period with several participants successfully completing the offering, each creating artwork that told their story.
Actually seeing my story and all the words on the page – secrets, healing, shame – seeing that it’s out there on canvas helps. It actually makes me feel better.
One participant shared, “Actually seeing my story and all the words on the page – secrets, healing, shame – seeing that it’s out there on canvas helps. It actually makes me feel better.“
Through the transformative power of art, individuals who have experienced complex trauma as Forgotten Australians, Find and Connect participants, and survivors of sexual abuse in institutions have found a safe space to explore and process their experiences.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% expressing satisfaction with the service and reporting improved abilities to cope with the challenges they sought help for.
Another participant reflected, “All our lives are for everyone else—children, family, partners—always trying to please everyone. We never had anything for ourselves, so this is good… You know, this is the first time that I have thought the word ‘survivor’ when I think about myself. And that’s what I’ve done, so today’s a good day for me.“
These testimonials highlight the profound impact of the workshops in empowering survivors to reclaim their narratives and find healing through artistic expression and supportive community engagement.
